Broadly speaking I shoot people and places, locally and globally. Anything from grand vistas to broom cupboards.
I have closed down streets, hung out of helicopters, been chased by lions, saved from drowning and shot in situations with armed guards.
I have been commissioned to shoot in locations as diverse as Greenland to The Seychelles, China to Chile.
Everyone and everywhere has a story to tell and it is my job to visually tell that story or to produce an image that makes you want to know more about the person or the place.
From years of shooting portraits of rock starts to Royalty, Nobel Prize winners to members of the Russian mafia I would like to think I now have an ability to connect with people from all walks of life.
Asides from photography I love screenwriting which accompanies the story telling narrative. I read a lot and watch a lot of films.
I play tennis, golf a bit and previously played rugby for London Scottish. I competed in several 10Ks and ran a half marathon by mistake. I took part in the first 4 mass participation open water swims in the UK on Lake Windermere. It was meant to be a mile but given my sense of direction think it was nearer a mile and a half.
In complete contrast I have 'tread the boards' at the Edinburgh Festival in a several plays.
In 2007 I travelled with my mother and sister to The Somme in northern France initially seeking the grave of a relative killed in WW1.
Alex Halkett had been a footballer and captain of Aberdeen FC and volunteered to fight, no doubt drafted into one of the many well intentioned but ill fated 'pals regiments'.
He was killed aged 35. Older than many whose corpses once scattered the fields of Northern France and who now lie in graveyards, arranged with Capability Brown style symmetry, that are sprinkled across the countryside.
We found the grave outside Sailly Au Bois a sleepy town between Arras and Amiens and where a field hospital had been. He died on 22nd February 1917. A gunner, he was injured one day and died the next. Who knows what went through his mind in the time it took to die but like each of the gravestones in every one of the cemeteries, beneath, lies somebody's son.
On the first day we arrived at Vimy Ridge, a giant white limestone structure split in two and surrounded by sheep. The white of the sheep echoing the central white structure. A sentinel standing sentient and serene, benevolently overseeing a once bloodied landscape. It is set at the high point like a white singularity and in a strange irony the sheep maintain a patrol acting as unwitting sappers for a land where unexploded shells to this day are still lurking.

Vimy Ridge is Canadian soil gifted by the French and tended by Canadian citizens. A distant hum of traffic drowned out by birds and the breeze. The sculpture is immense and powerful both in scale and the minimalist use of figures, heads hung in shame and despair, hands clenched. Beneath, lists and lists of names of the dead now fight for space, for recognition.
Ghosts of soldiers in an overcrowded parade whispering, \"That's me\".
(In the distance two giant pyramid slag heaps mark the site of the battle of Loos, one of the most feocious and ill fated battles. It is said that the Germans were so appalled they stopped firing as waves of men kept coming at them only to be sliced down. 60,000 British men and 30,000 Germans were killed or wounded.) In Dundee no-one was unaffected by the collosal losses. It is said in every street in the city a man had fallen.
On departure from the Vimy memorial we spotted a graveyard, the first we had seen. This was Givenchy. We stopped and I wandered aimlessly looking at the rows of graves. Two sometimes three even four names on a single head stone conveyed the horror of indistinguishable body parts. That and the absence of dog tags meant identifying bodies torn apart by flying metal was often not possible.
More often, the simple phrase,
“A soldier of the Great War, Known unto God”was all that appeared.
Soldiers from the London Scottish Regiment made me think of my rugby playing days at Old Deer Park in Richmond. A pals regiment but under a sporting banner.
In the background my sister called out.
“Where did you live in Edinburgh? Your first flat.”
“Strathearn Road”, I replied.
“What number?”
“Why?”
“What number?”
“Seventy.”
“You’d better look at this.”
At the entrance to each graveyard is a book listing all of the soldiers buried there. The first page she turned to and the first name she looked at was that of William A Allan of 70 Strathearn Road Edinburgh. 20,000 British men died on the first day alone of fighting in The Somme and in the opening of a book she found a soldier who lived at the same address I had.
I always said I would go back and in 2023 I did.
It is a deeply moving part of the world, unimagineable in its horror to most, including me, but it takes either a strong disposition or callous nature not to shed a tear at the sacrifice.

Shooting in China for a client I had the final Saturday off before flying out on a night flight back to the UK. The client had gone for a hotel massage and soon realised you have to be quite precise when asking for a massage in Shanghai. I had most of the day to explore and so went for a wander. The following images are a selection of those I took in the few hours I had to myself. I hope you enjoy looking at them. Initially I stumbled across a fascinating fairground with rides that felt as though they belonged in a different era. A few people were taking rides on some while some lay unused like forgotten toys. An overhead car took passengers on a slow squeaky ride through the trees while men and a few women played Mahjong and gambled on benches and at tables. I tried communicating by sign language and smiles but soon realised they were so engrossed in gambling that I was ignored. In one area a toothless man was flying a kite. I could see him holding a wire taught but the kite was so high it was lost in the clouds well above the height of the skyscrapers. Different from my days of running along a beach with 20 to 30m of thread. I jumped on a very modern and clean metro and ended up in another part of the city. There was another park. People sat behind rows of umbrellas with notes in Chinese on top and occasional pictures of young men and women. At first I thought these were people who were missing but it transpired this was where parents went to advertise their sons and daughters for marriage. It was the Shanghai version of Match.com. When I realised what it was I must have looked like a prospective suitor, window shopping, which given I had glanced at pictures of men and women they must have thought I couldn't decide which way to go! They had Japanese, Australian, American and German Flags but not a Union Jack that I could see. Finally I hit the modern part of Shanghai with it’s Gothamesque skyscrapers above which an eerie mist hung. It’s a city I cannot pretend to know well but has a wonderful juxtaposition of Western Modernism and old Eastern Communism. Not speaking the language meant I viewed the city visually with fewer distractions. By the time I reached the skyscrapers I would have liked to go to the top but time was running out and I only had time to jump on the metro back to my hotel before it was a fond farewell to Shanghai.
I first met Will Fiennes at the Edinburgh Book Festival. People were raving about his book, The Snow Geese, a thoughtful and personal travelogue. Brought up in a castle and educated at Eton then Oxford, in many ways he is the archetypal Englishman with a lack of vanity and a host of rather famous relatives. I was delighted to be asked to team up with Will for Intelligent Life Magazine first in South of France then again along the Northumberland coastline. We met in Southern France in a small village that had a café and bakery both of which we visited before embarking on our journey into the Verdon Gorge and along the river to an area called The Styx! The Verdon Gorge is a beautiful cavernous slice through the French landscape. However what you have to know is that it was the worst day in six weeks. The rain came down as though attached to lead shot. All day. Even through layers of Goretex we were soaked. Each of my lens cloths was wringing whilst the cameras offered an ethereal diffused vision of the Gorge as the clammy sodden atmosphere settled everywhere. Despite it all we had a ball. There is something refreshing about spending time with someone, who although being wet, tired and filthy still maintains a wonderful ‘joie de vivre’ and is fully appreciative of the glorious surroundings. Nearing journey’s end, or as it was the half way point, as we needed to retrace our hours of footwork, Will carried on to swim in the 'River Styx' as I embarked on taking some more pictures in one of the few areas where I was protected from the deluge. The next time we met was in Northumberland. I only had a day and was on location before sunrise. When I met Will he was bemoaning the preponderance of golf courses along the coastline. I see his point but as a golfer can think of a lot worse things to have. Ironically or perhaps inevitably we ended up eating in one of the clubhouses. The route just seemed to be miles of beaches and dunes and tricky to photograph. At various points along this route we would meet up and finally, opposite the causeway to Lindasfarne, we said our farewells. Will walked off into the distance. The domain of many of the self employed is to enjoy brief snippets of company before retreating to a solitary existence. It is an existence inhabited by writers, photographers and artists. It is an unnatural but necessary state. I hope that our paths will cross again on some other terrain. I have had the pleasure to meet with many writers and doff my hats to them. Writing is a considered medium. You write something, read it re-write it and so it goes on until you feel you have conveyed exactly the message and mood you hoped for. Photography by it's nature tends to be more from the gut. Well it is, after years and years of practice!
Soweto - Jo'Burg

This is a selection of images I shot for myself whilst on a commissioned shoot in South Africa. The hotel I stayed in was next to Tambo Airport in Jo'burg and like much of this part of the world was surrounded by fencing and security gates, not that there was much to see in the immediate vicinity.
Unlike many overseas jobs I had the weekend to myself although confess I spent the Saturday reading, relaxing and as it turned out, getting propositioned by prostitutes by the pool. I wasn't sure if swimming in the pool after the official closing time of 6pm was a coded signal to the ladies of the night, suffice to say I declined the offer from the amply proportioned lady and her pimp. Later that evening my sister greeted me, over the phone, with the news she had just got engaged. She gets proposed to and I get a proposal of a completely different kind!
On Sunday I decided to take a tour but did not want to join the tour buses. As a rule I don't do crowds and so I found a driver. He offered to take me on the usual tourist trail but I wanted to see the townships.
\"Will I get beaten up\", I asked. \"White boy, big camera?\" I smiled.
\"No Sir, of course not. It's all safe now. You'll be fine\".
Well if you ignore the fact that many people can't read and have acquired their driving licences on the black market so if we actually make it to Soweto I'll know at least somebody up there likes me.
I wanted to see Mandela's house, now a museum, how could you not? After that I was more interested in seeing where people lived and how, so off we went. Mandela was still alive at this time, albeit in a bad way and the overt corruption in the country must have dismayed him greatly. Several years later I got to photograph his daughter Zinzi, who sadly succumbed to Covid.
All these images were shot at a variety of locations in and around Soweto within a 5 hour time frame.
In an effort to help showcase photography in Scotland, the birthplace of many early examples of the medium, I opened a photography gallery simply called GALLERY-CLOSE in the heart of Edinburgh's historic New Town.
We host exhibitions and display a variety of different work throughout the year.

I approach photography as an artist and scientist having studied for a BSc in Photographic Sciences, and have a broader understanding of the chemistry and physics of the medium as well as the creative process.
In the next street along is the birthplace of James Clerk Maxwell, the greatest genius Scotland has ever had and, perhaps due to the complexity of his work, one of the least known. Amongst many acheivments he produced the first ever colour photograph.
Einstein said of Maxwell, \" One scientific epoch ended and another began with James Clerk Maxwell\". He changed everything.

I was asked to shoot range of Summer season hats and after much discussion and looking at various countries opted for South Africa. It was January so not exactly condusive to warm weather conditions in the northern hemisphere. The shoot was eventful taking in a variety of locations with a great crew . . . l work all over the world and experience and keeping cool under pressure is the key.
This logic also applies when a full grown male lion takes a dislike to you and launches into a charge. This picture was taken whilst speeding away from a lion at a safari park.

Dad's Tools
After my father passed I inherited his woodworking tools. A fascinating collection of planes, saws, spanners, drills, few of which I know much about. In his hands they were the tools of a craftsman. In mine they are objects of curiouslty.
He had been working on a bookcase for my Christmas and never got to finish it.
The smell of the wood and oils lingers long in the memory and with his name stamped on the wooden handles it still seems as though he is about to walk in and start using them.
I hear his voice in the background,
\"You'd make a better door than a window\", he would say to my younger childhood self as I gazed curiously over his shoulder, standing in front of the light source.
\" Pass the Glaswegian screwdriver\" was met with bemusement. Glaswegians have their own screwdriver?
A hammer!
In 2009 I presented a concept to the Edinburgh International Book Festival to host a ‘live exhibition’ of portraits of authors taken and displayed on site, in Charlotte Square Gardens. The Edinburgh International Book Festival (EIBF) is the world’s largest book festival and is part of the world’s largest festival that takes place annually in Edinburgh. After some logistical hurdles they kindly agreed and what has become an annual pilgrimage began. I describe the exhibition as a ‘live exhibition’ because the portraits are taken on site and the work is uploaded, retouched and printed at night, ready for hanging the next day. It thus grows daily as new work is added. The studio I work from is not, as has been suggested, 'a penthouse studio' but an outdoor backdrop in the gardens of the Book Festival. There is no pretence or pretensions and the set up negates I work quickly and with a simple lighting set up. It is a leveller for the great the good, the bad and the famous. Everyone is shot on the same background with similar lighting. ‘The studio’ which is exposed to the elements has no privacy. As a result it allows extroverts a stage to embrace, and offers little hiding for the shy. This combination of circumstances coupled with my own approach has produced a huge series of author portraits unlike any previously seen and has grown to become probably the only exhibition of its type anywhere in the world.
In portraiture I want to capture an element of humanity in the subject. My goal is not to flatter or deceive. I have anything from a few to thirty minutes with each person. Often people have seen the work and ask to be shot so preparation can go out of the window and a lot of the success depends on the ability to establish a rapport with the subject. I try not to have too many preconceptions of people I have not met. People have good days, bad days and I shoot them as I find them. Prejudging according to when you may have seen them on television, in films or from the work they have written is unwise and largely fruitless.

I have been a professional photographer long enough to have gained a wealth of experience, the kind of experience that helps to deal with the inevitable issues that crop up on shoots.
On location you are forced to think on your feet and rather like the well known golfing quote;

The year before I won the People's Choice award for my portrait of Nobel Prize winning scientist Peter Higgs.
Some years ago I was on a cross political commitee that looked at establishing the first major photography centre in Scotland. Sadly, with the best will in the world this did not come to fruitition. I was chair of the AOP(Scotland) for 4/5 years and helped establish a photography festival called Retina.
Asides from photography I enjoy films and screenwriting and I read a fair amount. I love book shops. Ben McIntyre is my most read author.
I play tennis, (once had a hit with Goran Ivanisovic) golf a bit (once played The Old Course with an Oscar winning actor) and previously played rugby for London Scottish. I took part in the first 4 mass participation open water swims in the UK on Lake

The Game
I was commissioned to shoot \"The Friendliest Match in Football\" between Motherwell and Hearts. The name being based on there being no, or very few police in attendance.
Football is not my game, hence I approached this from an entirely neutral perspective but still try to capture the passion felt by the fans of each hue. I met up with groups of rival fans before the match. At that stage things were perfectly amicable.
During the game it was a different story. No comparison with the war zone that is a 'Old Firm match in Glasgow.
Training Day
I returned to my old school stomping ground in Dundee to photograph rugby training. It was like travelling back in time.
Little had changed. The mud, the grass, the Deep Heat all smelled as it did and memories of my days and nights of practice on freezing turf came racing back, the1stXV training by the then Scottish captain that brought us to the point of near exhaustion.
I went into a changing room and in the echoing emptiness I could hear the pre match warm ups, the pep talk, the thundering of studs on the concrete floor as we nervously built up through our routine ready to challenge anyone.
A more sophisticated scrum machine had replaced the iron-age piece of equipment we had used. Then it was not much more than a rusty sledge loaded with concrete blocks. We were never the biggest team but somehow manged to beat the record for the amount driven. The foam padding having largely disintegrated and what little remained was wrapped in gaffer tape in a vague hope of providing some protection. An hour pushing lumps of concrete left us with blood soaked shirts.
In those days even wearing a t shirt underneath your top was considered soft. Gumshields and scrum caps were for the more effeminate and no team player would be seen sporting either.
Even from a young age you could spot the players with future potential.
The 1stXV operated at a different level of intensity and mistakes earned added press ups for all. Such misdemeanors did not serve to divide or encourage blame but rather helped to forge a camaraderie and mutual support.

Milan - Italian Fashion, Italian Passion
I was sent to Milan to cover a story about aspects of the city and its passion for football. I could not have timed my few days in the city better.
AC Milan were playing on one of the days at the San Siro Stadium. For £10, about a tenth of the price of a Premier League match in the UK, I bought myself a ticket. Apparently the stadium is considerd one of the meccas of European Football.
On the very same day Iocal rivals Inter Milan were announced as winners of the Championship and so I headed for the town centre and the predominance of red and black at the San Siro gave way to the blue and black of Inter Milan. Huge flags were being waved from car windows and by pillion passengers on scooters, cars stopped in the middle of busy streets for fans to jump out and run around in circles waving their beloved colours.
Throughout the celebrations it poured and one of my £5000 'weather sealed' Nikon cameras stopped working! I had to retire to a nearby gents to place it under the hand drier and get it back in action.
I returned to outside the Duomo and climbed onto the statue in the central quad with a multitude of fans and was able to shoot the remarkable spectacle of passion, energy and delight.
I do not follow football but it was something to witness the joy of half of the cities populous.
My lack of Italian also meant I used Google translate to show to the Italians I would meet to explain who I was shooting for and ask permisssion. I was covering many parts of the city.
Fortunately I asked the writer of the article to cross check what I had printed out. Inadvertenty I had asked to kill people, the literal translation of,

I have no idea what a jail in Milan would be like but the female police officers wore heels!
